Cardiovascular disease is deadly!  According to the CDC, it’s the leading cause of death for men in the United States. In fact, it accounts for the deaths of about 1 in 4 men. And although there are hereditary factors, many men can attribute smoking, high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol as key risk factors for the disease. There are other health conditions and habits that put men at risk and they include diabetes, obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol use. Fortunately, there are many ways to reduce the risks, but there are always new treatments and procedures being introduced as a compliment or alternatives to traditional treatments.

A recent study was conducted by a research team from the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute to study 755 male patients with severe coronary artery disease, a common form of heart disease. They were separated into three groups and were administered testosterone  therapy. This allowed the institute to observe how the dosage of testosterone affected the patient’s existing heart disease. The males involved in the study ranged between the ages of 58-78 resulting in those who received a high dosage of testosterone suffering a lower percentage of adverse cardiovascular events. Those who did not receive any testosterone therapy had severe cardiovascular events.

Patients received follow-up treatment, with some receiving testosterone-therapy and some who did not receive testosterone-therapy. The patients who received it did much better than the patients who did not receive testosterone-therapy, who were 80 percent more likely to suffer an adverse event by not receiving it.

The study suggests that testosterone therapy may decrease cardiovascular events, but it wasn’t conclusive. It does suggest that testosterone therapy may be effective at decreasing the risk of some cardiovascular events. “Although this study indicates that hypo-androgenic men with coronary artery disease might actually be protected by testosterone replacement, this is an observational study that doesn’t provide enough evidence to justify changing treatment recommendations,” The study went on to say, “It does, however, substantiate the need for a randomized clinical trial that can confirm or refute the results of this study.

This type of study had been conducted previously by the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute and this latest study produced similar results. There may not be proof that testosterone therapy decreases the chance of a heart attack, but the findings show that testosterone therapy does not increase the risk.
