Why You Should Avoid the Sun After Skin Rejuvenation Treatments

Skin rejuvenation treatments are excellent for repairing the effects of sun damage, acne and aging. Sun damage happens when the skin has been excessively exposed to UV rays. The result is a loss of collagen and elasticity, which can make the skin thin, dry, dull, wrinkled and riddled with dark spots. Some of the best treatments for correcting the damage are dermabrasion, microdermabrasion and chemical peels. The resurfacing of the skin from these treatments  improves the texture and stimulates collagen production. The result is skin that is smoother, tighter and free of blemishes.
Once you have one of these treatments, you’ll need to put the brakes on your plans to sunbathe. The sun’s UV rays are your worst enemy after a skin treatment as they can completely derail your healing. Don’t forget, excess UV exposure is what caused the very problem that your skin resurfacing treatment is meant to correct.

The UV rays from the sun can cause a burning inflammation to the skin, so it’s imperative to avoid the sun for several weeks after a skin-rejuvenating treatment. During this time, the skin is in the healing process and is extremely delicate from the procedure. Because of the skin resurfacing process, the skin is automatically subject to inflammation, once the fresh new skin is exposed. Since chemical peels  may result in blistering or flaking, the skin may be further irritated, if it is exposed to the sun. Even milder treatments like microdermabrasion can result in major inflammation if exposed to the sun.

If you decide to take a chance and subject your skin to UV ray, you may increase your vulnerability of sunburn, especially if you’re taking some medications. Particularly acne medications may increase your chances of inflammation, because skin irritation post skin rejuvenation treatment can be exacerbated by the sun. If you’re using topical treatments like benzoyl peroxide, alpha hydroxy acid and retinoids, you may risk more inflammation, caused by the sun. You should check the medication, before using, for increased photosensitivity with the use.

If you’re determined to get out into the sun, avoid it from 10 am to 4 pm. Make sure you use sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher and reapply every 2 hours. Dip into the shade and wear a hat for more shielding. You’re newly resurfaced skin will have a much better healing process.

Dermabrasion, microdermabrasion and chemical peels are treatments that can help repair skin damage, so if you want to schedule an appointment to get brand new firm skin, call or stop by.
