School officials have suspended classes to prepare for this year’s winter after last year’s winter which became a hard lesson for the City of Richardson according to a Community Impact article from February 2 which reports,
“Most North Texas school districts have already made the call to cancel school for Thursday and Friday due to the expected winter weather.
At Canyon Creek Elementary School in Richardson, kids were clearly excited with the news of no school the next two days.
But after so many spent days without power in last February’s storm, there are also worries of a repeat.
Last year, before the winter storm hit, some school districts said they were going to try virtual school instead of days off, but this year, there is no talk about any virtual school on a snow day.”
However, schools aren’t the only ones bracing up for winter as the entire city will also suspend its public services to avoid suffering the consequences brought by the winter weather according to a Fox 4 News article from February 2. They say,
“The city of Richardson has canceled and/or postponed a number of services in preparation for severe winter weather that is expected to hit the North Texas area Feb. 3-4.
All Feb. 4 solid waste collection has been canceled due to expected icy road conditions. Collections are delayed or suspended when conditions are such that vehicles cannot safely travel down alleys, and personnel would be at risk of slipping and getting injured during the collection process.
City facilities that will remain closed on Feb. 3 include the Gymnastics Center, Huffhines Tennis Center, Richardson Senior Center and Sherrill Park Golf Course. The Richardson Gymnastics Center will also be closed Feb. 4.
All Feb. 3-4 due dates at the municipal court have been extended to 5 p.m. Feb. 7. All dockets and hearings are being rescheduled to Feb. 10 at the same docket time. Residents may call the court to confirm the status of their case, though the city press release states it recommends the use of the court’s online options.”
Despite these suspension of services, the Richardson Police Department will be open to accommodate people who will need a place to stay or people who will lose power during the storm.
