ACNE & ACNE SCAR TREATMENTS

At Advanced Skin Fitness

Advanced skin fitness can solve your acne and acne scar issues

Although there are numerous skin conditions that are characterized by visible blemishes and imperfections, acne is the most common among teenagers and young adults.  Unfortunately, the eruption of pimples, blackheads, cysts, oily skin and whiteheads often leave a compilation of red marks, dark spots and craters after a breakout has subsided.  The effects on the appearance are distressing and can be emotionally debilitating, reducing some to anxiety and depression.

Acne sometimes treated with oral or topical antibiotics and astringents, but for those who have developed a resistance to these medications, a more aggressive, but non-invasive approach, can be a better solution.  At Advanced Skin Fitness, we use modern techniques to effectively prevent flare-ups from reoccurring.  We also minimize and possibly permanently remove the scarring caused by severe outbreaks by going deep into the skin’s surface to correct the problem, something topical medications are unable to do.  For this, we have a few procedures that we perform that involves skin resurfacing.  Before having the acne treated, it’s important to understand what acne is, the causes, and how the procedures we perform correct the problem of breakouts and scarring afterward.

What is acne and what causes it?

Acne vulgaris, more commonly called acne, is the collection of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads on the skin, that develops when the pores are clogged around the hair follicle.

Acne is an inflammation that occurs in the sebaceous glands when hair follicles become clogged with sebum oil and dead skin cells.  Indicators of this inflammation are when pimples, blackheads, cysts and whiteheads appear on the face, chest, shoulders, back, upper arms and neck.

The exact causes are difficult to pinpoint.  Possible reasons for the inflammation can vary from genetic predisposition to diet and environment.  But it is known to be associated with the increase in androgens and testosterone in the body.  Influences that can exacerbate the condition are stress, seasonal fluctuations in hormone levels, gluten, dairy, salty foods, pregnancy, cosmetics and birth control pills.  Humidity can also aggravate acne since it causes the skin to excrete more oil.

Who gets acne and how is it treated?

Typically, acne is most prominent among adolescent teens but can reoccur until adults have significantly passed the age of 40.The first occurrence of acne often appears during the adolescent years, but many people don’t see acne until they reach adulthood.  Young women sometimes have sporadic bouts of acne because of their menstrual cycle.  Young men are more commonly affected by severe acne and more pronounced scars following their breakouts.

What are the best treatments for acne and acne scars?

Minimally or non-invasive treatments PhotoDynamic Therapy utilizing Blue Light with Levulan or HydraFacial typically provide the fastest, long-term results for active acne.  Acne Scars are reduced or eliminated with resurfacing procedures such as CO2 Laser Resurfacing, Alma Pixel Laser Resurfacing, Micro Needling with RF, and Alma Pixel RF are ideal for removing acne scars.

What is Laser Resurfacing?

Laser Resurfacing is a laser technology procedure that vaporizes tiny holes in the skin, stimulating tissue healing which in turn contours and corrects scarring due to acne and other external factors.

The procedure is a modern laser resurfacing treatment that creates microscopic holes in the skin to deliver heated microthermal energy to controlled depths of the skin’s surface.  CO2 Laser Resurfacing delivers the deepest resurfacing while Alma Pixel Laser Resurfacing is more superficial.  These techniques are performed to create small wounds to repair the damaged skin while leaving a reservoir of healthy tissue.  The skin heals in about 5 – 10 days depending on which laser resurfacing procedure is selected and the patient typically sees a 20 – 50% reduction in the scars after 1 treatment.  The laser removes damaged outer skin layers and then encourages the production of new cells through the natural formation of collagen, which will give the patient smoother, more attractive skin.

What is Blue Light Treatment?

Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses high-intensity blue light to destroy bacteria, improving acne inflammations of bumps and pimples.

The treatment is performed with a photodynamic device that penetrates the skin to deliver blue light waves, which kills the p. acne bacteria that causes severe acne.  The body can naturally fight bacteria with porphyrins and continue to kill lingering bacteria.

What is DermaSweep MD Microdermabrasion?

DermaSweep MD Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment that improves the texture of the skin by shedding the dead damaged outer layer of the skin and thoroughly clearing clogged pores.

It’s an exfoliation process that significantly reduces brown spots, clogged and enlarged pores, acne scarring.  It’s highly effective at combating the effects of aging and external factors.  In some cases, Microdermabrasion can eliminate the damage, depending on how many sessions are performed and the intensity of each treatment.  The process helps to accelerate blood flow so that collagen will begin to grow naturally, firm and tighten the skin.  The skin will become more elastic and the texture of the skin will be much smoother with more balanced pigment.

What is Micro Needling with RF?

Micro Needling with Radio Frequency is a technique that helps smooth out wrinkles, induce collagen and elastin reproduction and eliminate texture issues caused by acne scars.

When having the Micro Needling with Radio Frequency procedure, after numbing the skin the technician will use tiny insulated needles to permeate the skin to a depth that boosts the skin’s ability to generate collagen.  The technician has the ability to control how deep the needles puncture the skin, therefore achieving the maximum results.  The dermal layer will begin to emit heat and enter a repairing phase, thus tightening the skin, volumizing the dermis and eliminating the icepick, boxcar and rolling scars caused by atrophic acne.  Skin will bounce back quicker, appear thicker and balanced in color without injuring the dermis.

What is Hydrafacial?

Hydrafacial is a safe, non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that delivers the beneficial properties of an elevated chemical peel in a series of specific steps for smooth healthy skin.  The procedure also involves painlessly removing any exorbitance of oil that has accumulated in the pores and hydrating the skin with antioxidants.

When having a HydraFacial treatment, the technician who performs the procedure will use a serum to shed the deadened skin atop the dermal surface. This dramatically enhances the healthy skin underneath the dead cells. The next step involves using GlyCal, for the chemical peel effect, then excess oil is absorbed from the skin with an automatic suction tool to help prevent reoccurring acne.
