ABOUT laser skin resurfacing

Laser Resurfacing is a procedure that can be performed through RF Pixel or C02. The treatment creates tiny holes in the dermal layer of the skin to deliver heated energy into controlled depths. This process is designed to contour the skin, correct wrinkles, minimize discoloration and tighten loose skin.

The laser resurfacing process creates numerous and contained microscopic holes in small zones of the treatment area. The Radio Frequency is able to penetrate the skin to a controlled depth, so it can treat the area without damaging the rest of the skin. While the area is being treated a small section of the tissue surrounding the openings is abraded and promotes the healing necessary to reduce and eliminate abnormal pigmentation, reduce pore size, minimize stretch marks and tighten the skin.

  • Acne Scars

When the skin develops pits or raised areas in the surface, it’s often a result of severe acne. The condition is exacerbated by picking or scratching, which creates lesions that become acne scars.

  • Loss of Collagen

As a result of aging, the skin can become loose, wrinkle and decrease in elasticity. Natural cell renewal weakens, so the skin begins to lose firmness and smoothness.

  • Sagging Skin

Due to the loss of collagen from aging, the skin may appear less supple and start to droop. There is also a loss of elasticity that causes the skin to lose its spring.

  • Textured Skin

Sun damage, age and elements in the environment can make the skin noticeably rough. The smoothness decreases gradually with age, so the skin can develop a harsh surface.
Large pores – When sebum production becomes excessive, the pores can fill with dirt and bacteria. Oily skin, acne and blackheads are often an indication of large pores.

  • Sun Damage

UVA rays can cause damage to the skin that produces wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots and skin discolorations. The skin can become dry and lose some its natural oils.

  • Brown Spots

When there is an excessive production of melanin in the skin, dark spots may appear on the skin. Sun damage and aging can cause this condition.

  • Hyperpigmentation

This happens when the skin darkens from sun exposure, inflammation, injury or an overproduction of melanin in the skin. Liver spots and freckles are also an indication of hyperpigmentation.
Surgical scars – After surgeries like face lifts, tummy tucks, implants or liposuction, scars may appear post surgery. This occurs because the skin has been cut during the procedure and has begun to heal.

  • Anti-Aging

The process of reducing skin damage like wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin. Through special treatments and procedures the aging process can be slowed down dramatically.
Heavy eye lids – With aging the upper eyelids can develop excess skin, which may make the eyelids feel heavy. Other causes of eyelid heaviness are dry eyes and eye allergies.

  • Wrinkles Around Mouth

As we age, the skin begins to lose collagen and elastin around the mouth area. Wrinkles begin to form and increase as we get older.

  • Deep Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet is characterized as a cluster of wrinkles and fine lines that form around the eyes. When crow’s feet is significantly more pronounced, it’s often referred to as deep crow’s feet.

  • Fine Lines

As people age, lines can form around the eyes and mouth. Facial expressions like smiling and frowning can form fine lines and make them more pronounced with age.

What is C02 Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing using a C02 Laser is a procedure that dramatically smooths the skin by removing dead skin layers and creating microscopic burned areas of the tissue.  C02 is considered the “gold standard” of laser resurfacing and the new fractional C02 laser resurfacing offered at Advanced Skin Fitness is the newest technology available. The C02 laser beam delivers a warm pulse of light that is absorbed by the water in the tissue.  The heat from the laser creates the microscopic holes that later heal and repair to eliminate the visible signs of aging and acne scars while stimulating collagen production to deliver visible anti-aging benefits.  C02 Laser Resurfacing is the most aggressive form of laser resurfacing available.  It’s designed to give big results in 1 – 3 treatments but requires around 7 – 10 days of recovery.

What is the cost of the C02 Laser Resurfacing treatment and how many are required?

Typical costs for a C02 laser are around $3000 per treatment.  At Advanced Skin Fitness, we often have specials that reduce this price dramatically.  Check our “Online Specials” for more details.  Depending on the severity of the skin condition, 1 – 3 treatments may be required.

What are the risks involved with C02 Laser Resurfacing?

C02 laser resurfacing is a riskier procedure than other forms of skin resurfacing.  It’s generally safe for Caucasian skin but can be especially risky for darker skin.  With any procedure that opens the skin, there is a risk of infection as well as a risk of stimulating an outbreak of Herpes Simplex on the face.  Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation is also a risk for C02 laser resurfacing but this can typically be prevented by pretreatment with hydroquinone.

When will I see results with C02 Laser Resurfacing?

Results from a C02 laser resurfacing treatment can be seen quickly.  Usually, after the skin heals in about 10 days there will be a noticeable difference in the texture of the skin and a remarkable reduction in acne scars.  The texture will continue to improve for about 4 – 6 months after your final C02 procedure.

What is Pixel Laser Resurfacing?

It’s an Erbium Yag Laser technology that contours and corrects imperfections in the skin caused by aging, the sun, acne and other environment factors by creating microscopic injuries in the skin.

Pixel Laser Resurfacing is a non-invasive procedure that works to correct scarring due to acne, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, tighten sagging skin, revitalize and rejuvenate skin to a younger more vibrant appearance and contour loose damaged skin.

Skin that has damaged by the sun, stretched from pregnancy, pocked from acne, and ravaged by age will appear smoother and refreshed. The treatment is intended to penetrate the skin to a controlled depth creating microscopic injuries and promote the natural formation of collagen. Once the injuries have healed and the collagen has started to regenerate, the skin will tighten, become smoother and have reduced discoloration.

How does Pixel Laser Resurfacing work?

Pixel Laser Resurfacing creates tiny holes in the dermal layer of the skin to deliver heated energy into controlled depths. This process is designed to contour the skin, correct wrinkles, minimize discoloration and tighten loose skin.

The Pixel Laser Resurfacing incorporates a fractional laser technology that heats the skin through the direct distribution of energy. It then creates numerous and contained microscopic holes in small zones of the treatment area. The laser beams are able to penetrate the skin to a controlled depth, so they can treat the area without damaging the rest of the skin. While the area is being treated a small section of the tissue surrounding the openings is abraded and promotes the healing necessary to reduce and eliminate abnormal pigmentation, reduce pore size, minimize stretch marks and tighten the skin.

After the treatment the surface of the skin should appear smoother once the production of new collagen ensues. The area is treated by Pixel Laser to augment the recovery of the tissue. This process improves the outcome of the treatment and reduces any downtime.

How long does the Pixel Laser treatment take?

The treatment can take about 45minutes on average.

The procedure time can vary depending on the size of the treatment area and the severity of the skin damage. Most treatments can range between 15 and 45 minutes for each session. Patients should expect to see quick results and significant improvement in their skin. The collagen reproduction is gradual, so patients should notice continued improvement for up to 6 months. For maximum effectiveness you may want to have 4-6 treatments during those months.

Is there downtime with Pixel Laser?

Pixel Laser is non-surgical and requires minimum downtime.

The treatment is minimally-invasive and is accompanied by a cooling device, so patients don’t experience as much discomfort with the extensive healing afterwards as with other lasers. Some patients may notice a miniscule amount of swelling that subsides soon after the treatment has been performed. But it’s not unusual to experience redness and peeling for 5-7 days.

Is there pain with Pixel Laser?

For most patients, Pixel Laser Resurfacing is only mildly uncomfortable.

Pixel Laser resurfacing is minimally-invasive so patients won’t run the risk of suffering that results from surgical lacerations and deeper lasers such as a CO2. The treatment is very tolerable, with some patients describing it as a light snapping or the pop of a rubber band. The more intense the treatment is for more severely damaged skin and more obtrusive scars, the treatment may be less comfortable. This can happen especially to patients with more deeply embedded wrinkles and pervasive flaws and discolorations from acne and stretched skin.

For these patients the heat may be a more acute sensation. It all depends on how sensitive the patient is to the treatment. If it becomes too uncomfortable, the technician can use topical numbing cream or a cooling device to counteract the intense sensation of heat, most specifically cold air on the treated area. This should curb the discomfort and make the procedure a lot easier to endure.

Is Pixel Laser safe for all skin types?

Pixel RF Resurfacing works for most types of skin.

For patients who are ethnically diverse, skin color varies from fair to very dark, so they are often susceptible to hyperpigmentation, burns or minimal effectiveness when having certain laser treatments. Pixel Laser can be used on most skin types, including skin types 1 – 4.
