Chemodenervation with Botox. Is it Always on Target?

Chemodenervation, which is using Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers (HA fillers) such as Restylane, Perlane, or Juvederm with a botulinum toxin like Dysport or Botox, has been a preferred solution for eliminating and preventing wrinkles, especially frown and smile lines. These nuisances slowly manage to creep over the skin and remain as perpetual definitions in the skin’s surface, due to elasticity loss. This is commonly a result of aging and sun damage. To smooth out the skin and keep wrinkles at bay botox injections paralyze the muscle so that new wrinkles aren’t able to form from facial expressions like smiling and frowning. Unfortunately, HA fillers, when used as the sole injection, have fleeting effects because of the degeneration of the compound. Chemodenervation prolongs the effects of the filler and helps to slow down the degeneration; therefore, the skin stays smooth longer.

There have been other uses for chemodenervation, especially to treat spasticity, which is a condition that involves stiffness in the muscles. Chemodenervation acts as a treatment to improve the movement in those areas. Precision is imperative. If the insertion of the botox disturbs the sensory nerves near the injection site, the patient could be at risk of indefinite pain, that may only be relieved with medication. The toxin is not intended to treat large areas at once, so it’s important that only the contracting muscles are injected. Otherwise surrounding muscles can be damaged.

Although there is increased longevity in the effects of the botulism injection, if muscles around the injection area are effected by the Botox or Dysport injection, the effects should minimize in about 3 to 4 months. Any areas that have been unintentionally paralyzed should eventually relax and return to a previous normal state. .

Sometimes patients are not treated by a responsible physician and they’re not warned about possible paralysis in other areas. When they’re accidentally injected outside the area being treated for paralysis,  their condition leaves them in a worse predicament than before.

If patients have experienced paralysis in other areas besides the targeted nerves, there is no guarantee that the effects will totally wear off. It’s crucial that a licensed physician administers the injection properly. This way you lower your risk of permanent paralysis or temporary paralysis in unintended nerves.
