Collagen is an important and crucial protein in your body. It is responsible for providing structure to our bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and of course our skin. Our skin cannot become radiant and youthful without collagen because these are where new skin cells grow and these are the ones that replace the old and damaged skin cells. And so naturally, the more collagen we have, the more chances of having healthy and great-looking skin.

Unfortunately, collagen and collagen production can be affected negatively by different factors such as ultraviolet rays, stress, smoking and aging. These factors can damage and break down collagen and they can slow down the production of collagen. And without sufficient collagen in our skin, we become susceptible to different skin diseases and conditions such as wrinkles, fine lines, keratosis, acne scars, dry and dull skin and many more!

Naturally, we want to prevent those from happening and instead boost and encourage collagen production in our skin. Here are 6 tips on how you can increase collagen in your skin!

  1. Protect your skin from sun damage

Our skin is very vulnerable to ultraviolet rays which can penetrate our skin’s natural barrier and cause damage deep in our skin. And so naturally, we want to keep our skin away from sun damage. One of the most helpful things you can do is cover your skin with clothing to prevent sun exposure. You can wear shades, wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves and pants to secure your skin properly! Additionally, you can also use moisturizers and sunblocks to add more protection and barriers to your skin.

Even if sun damage primarily comes from the sun, it is also important to skip and avoid tanning beds as they can also emit ultraviolet rays which can also damage your skin and discourage collagen production.

  1. Limit and stop smoking

When we say stop smoking, we are not just saying this to save your lungs and your life. We are also encouraging you to stop so that your skin can breathe and function better. Smoking is responsible for limiting nutrients and oxygen in your entire system, including your skin cells which badly need these. Skipping and avoiding cigarettes will enable your skin to create more collagen since your skin cells are able to receive nutrients. Additionally, avoiding the nicotine helps the collagens in your skin to stay alive since neutrophils in cigarettes are known to aggressively attack collagen.

  1. Get beauty sleeps

Getting a beauty sleep is an amazing way of healing and rejuvenating your entire skin. Repeated and consecutive beauty sleeps will enhance this rejuvenation more! This is because you allow your body and your skin to function properly and better! As you get your beauty sleep, you also limit the stress in your mind and in your body, making them work efficiently. Of course, when you get these rests, your skin is able to produce more and more collagen.

  1. Get proper diet

Food is the biggest factor when it comes to health. Essentially, this is the same for collagen production. Eating unhealthy foods will definitely compromise your collagen numbers and even your collagen production. But sticking through a proper diet? That will enable you to boost your defenses and your collagen production. Not only will your skin be happy but it will also glow up with a radiance and youth.

It is good to take in foods that are rich in antioxidants such as green teas, blueberries, coffee extract, cinnamon, basil, oregano and many many more! Additionally, taking in foods that are rich in Vitamin C will make your collagen production even better. If you want proper advice, go to a dermatologist or an expert so you will know which food can help you get that radiant glow. But generally, help yourself and stay away from foods that are high in sugar and high in sodium.

  1. Hydrate more

Hydration has always been among the top advises when it comes to skin and fitness. But did you know that proper hydration will enable you to increase collagen in your body? While elastin is more known to be associated with water, good production of collagen is also a product of proper hydration. This is because water is a good source of nutrients and a good way to eliminate toxins from your body. Altogether, this helps with making the production of collagen efficient and effective. Additionally, having a hydrated skin offers protection against sun damage and other external factors that can affect and destroy collagen production and collagen themselves.

  1. Undergo treatments

Of course, one of the best ways to encourage collagen production is by undergoing treatments. There are so many treatments to choose from. Among them are skin resurfacing, chemical peels, hydrafacials, photofacials and dermaplane. These are all known to be effective in boosting collagen production along with so many benefits on their own. These treatments are also safe and convenient to undergo. And of course, these are all available in Belle Ame Med Spa.
