The heat wave of summer is almost here and millions of people are ready to enjoy all of the perks of the hot season. So be prepared to take full advantage of frolicking at the beach, amusement parks, picnics, dips in the lake, outdoor sports, hikes and strolls on the boardwalks, anything that will make your summer a complete blast. But before you step out into the sultry hot sun, make sure you have your major essentials to help protect you from the dangerous effects of exposure to the sun; sunglasses, a hat with a brim and let’s not forget the most important necessity of all – sunscreen to block those dangerous ultraviolet rays.
So what’s the best sunscreen to use? You should choose a sunscreen with broad-spectrum or multi-spectrum protection that contains one of the following ingredients; benzophenones (oxybenzone), cinnamates, sulisobenzone, salicylates, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, avobenzone and ecamsule.
Actually, while they’re all very effective, titanium-dioxide and zinc oxide are hands down the best choice for sunscreen protection.
So why are titanium-dioxide and zinc oxide so superior to the others? Let’s first start with titanium-dioxide. It offers some of the broadest protection and it works to significantly reflect and absorb ultraviolet light, as it blocks UVB and short UVA. It’s also non-irritating to the skin, which is beneficial to people who are sensitive to chemical dominant sunscreens.
Zinc oxide also offers a sufficient amount of broad protection against UV rays and it is often also used as a skin protectant and anti-irritant, when treating a variety of skin irritations.
Unfortunately, titanium-dioxide and zinc oxide have both been known to leave a white residue after applying it to the skin. While we all know better by now than to purposely damage our skin by trying to get a bronzy tan, that doesn’t mean that we want to go to the other extreme and use a product that makes us look pale and ghostly. Don’t worry, there have been some advances in the formula for sunscreens. When nano particles are used as a sunscreen agent, there is less white residue. There are also slightly tinted sunscreens available to blend in with any skin type.
Titanium-dioxide and zinc oxide are by far the best sunscreen solutions on the market. And even though zinc oxide is the ideal protection of the two, it is much more effective when combined with titanium-dioxide and other chemical UVB and UVA blockers.
