What is Botox?
To put it simply, Botox is a highly purified and naturally occurring protein that is used to weaken facial muscles for the appearance of younger-looking skin. It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines on your skin. It is NOT a paralysis-inducing substance. It will NOT make you look like a stiff and unnatural caricature if administered correctly by a trained professional.
Who can get Botox?
Anyone who has visible wrinkles they want to eradicate will benefit from Botox. Crow’s feet, smile lines, nasolabial folds, brow furrows, all can be treated with Botox. Sometimes, In some cases, Botox can be used as a preventive measure BEFORE wrinkles develop for people in their 20’s or 30’s. Although it’s a popular cosmetic treatment for women, men can benefit from it too.
Before Treatment
You will be meeting with an injection specialist for an initial consultation. This is your chance to ask any questions, express your concerns and really get the one on one tailored expertise you need to customize an appropriate treatment plan. Your esthetician will go through your medical history with you ask you about areas you’d like to improve. We’ll work with you to set some realistic treatment goals. Here are a few of the things you can expect to go over with your specialist during your initial consultation,
- Pre-Existing Conditions – This includes any muscle or nerve issues like difficulty with swallowing or breathing.
- History of Surgery – Any past facial surgeries will affect treatment.
- Medications – Any and all medications should be disclosed whether prescribed or over-the-counter, including vitamins and herbal supplements.
- Pregnancy – For women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, Botox is discouraged.
- Any other possible conditions that may negatively affect your health during the treatment.
During the Treatment
This is a quick and easy procedure. Your specialist will go through the information you provided, then if all is clear, they’ll mark the areas you want work on, cleanse those areas, and apply a topical numbing cream. Then they will use a micro-needle to inject the Botox directly into your facial muscles. Finally, ice and pressure will be applied to minimize swelling. The whole procedure should take no more than 30 minutes.
After the Treatment
Your specialist will send you home with after-care instructions that will help to minimize swelling, bruising, and redness. You can resume your normal day-to-day activities right after the treatment since the procedure requires no downtime.
The effects of Botox are temporary and will last three or four months. If you want longer-lasting results, you will need to schedule a treatment at regular intervals, or before special events.
