Wrinkles: Where do they come from?

There’s no denying it. Once wrinkles form, they’re difficult to ignore. The lines, the sagging, the laugh lines and crows feet can become prominent and get progressively worse. But how did they get there in the first place? Does it matter? Sure it does. Knowing what causes wrinkles can give you the best perspective on how to treat them and prevent new ones from forming.

Wrinkles can manifest themselves in different ways; dynamically and intrinsically. Dynamic wrinkles develop from muscle movements from facial expressions. These movements cause the skin to tighten. This especially happens when we squint, laugh, smile or frown. They usually form between the brows, around the eyes, the forehead and around the mouth.

Intrinsic wrinkles form from natural age progression, when the skin sags and loses collagen and elasticity. For women, the lack of estrogen from hormonal changes can cause a decrease in collagen levels. For men and women, gravity can loosen up the skin, making it sag. The effects are drooping eyelids and jowls.

There are a few reasons that skin will begin to wrinkle. So it’s just a matter of time before it begins to happen naturally, but there are ways to avoid wrinkling before it’s time. Exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays will produce photoaging effects, causing the skin to wrinkle. The skin will prematurely age and suffer from the breakdown of collagen. Being subjected to free radicals like UV radiation, smoking and air pollutions will also force the reduction in collagen in the skin.

So how can these wrinkles be treated, regardless of how they have been formed? There are safe, non-surgical procedures that will help to prevent dynamic wrinkles from forming when facial expressions are made. Dysport is a safe, non-invasive injectable botulin toxin Type A that blocks the nerve impulses to temporarily paralyze the muscles that cause wrinkles.

There are other procedures that reduce intrinsic wrinkles and trigger new collagen production. The skin will be tighter, smoother and have a dramatic reduction in sagging. Microneedling, Microdermabrasion and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy are a few treatments that effectively treat wrinkles.

Some wrinkles may require a more invasive approach, depending on how damaged the skin is.  Stop in today, so we can recommend the best treatment for your wrinkles. Most of the treatments are quick, non invasive, painless with no downtime.
